Village of Cardington Street Worker
Job Description
GENERAL FUNCTION
This position works under the general supervision of the Village Administrator of the maintenance and repair of streets, alleys, sidewalks, and sewer drains, ditches, culverts, and Village of Cardington property.
This job requires being able to lift up to 100 pounds, operate and handle heavy equipment, including jackhammers, backhoes, and dump trucks, and work in adverse weather conditions. Much of the work is outside, year-round work.
Individuals will be required to work by themselves and at remote locations away from Village offices. Individuals should be self-motivated, responsible, hard working and require little supervision.
Much of the individual’s work is done in public, and as such a candidate for this position should have strong customer service skills, and be capable of interacting in a professional fashion with members of the Village community.
CONTROLS OVER WORK
Under the general supervisory control of the Village Administrator employees shall operate with relative independence of action in planning and carrying out day-to-day activities. Technical guidance in the form of operating procedures and processes has been established by equipment manufacturers, design engineers, and the State of Ohio.
It shall be clearly understood that the street worker will work in other areas of the Village such as with Wastewater or Water Department activities when needed. The street worker shall be familiar with the operation of heavy machinery including back-hoe and skid steer equipment, and may be called upon to assist with street, water, and storm water repairs, brush and leaf pick-up, and other duties as assigned by the Village Administrator. The Village of Cardington has a very small workforce, so employees will be asked to help where needed. However, the primary responsibilities of the street workers will be regarding the street department activities.
REPRESENTATIVE ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(Note – this list is intended only to illustrate the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements does not exclude them from the position.)
1.Participate in snow and ice removal in the winter when needed. Operate trucks and apply salt. Use the Bobcat to remove snow. Clear and clean sidewalks.
2.Mowing and property maintenance tasks when needed, including weed eating.
3.Respond to and help repair water leaks.
4.Street sweeping. Operate street sweeper.
5.Chipping brush. Be able to operate chipper.
6.Leaf removal. Operate leaf machine.
7.Maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, and buildings. Including cleaning trucks and tools.
8.Help identify needed improvement projects in the Village
9.Park maintenance. Painting, repair of park equipment, picking up trash, mowing if needed, added mulch or materials to the park if needed.
10.Assist with tree trimming and tree removal and tree planting. Keep a record of hours and resources spend on trees for Tree City USA application.
11.Water flowers when needed. Assist with beautification of the Village.
12.Perform street repairs including patching pots holes, crack sealing, installing catch basins. Repair of streets, alleys, sidewalks, sewer drains, ditches, culverts, and Village of Cardington property
13.Repair and unclog sewer lines with Vac truck.
14.Perform traffic control safely.
15.Run errands for parts and materials.
16.Perform other old jobs and tasks as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (Entry Requirements)
Knowledge of: Operation of heavy machinery and equipment. Operator experience with tractors, trucks, dump truck, Vac trucks, street sweeper, backhoe, bobcat, and mowers. Any knowledge of utility system and water and sewer lines is a plus. Construction experience with utilities and roads is desirable.
Ability to: Be self-motivated and work with little supervision. Be hard working and work well as a member of a team and work well with other Village staff and residents. Follow directions specifically and complete task in a timely and efficient manner. Communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors. Engage Fiscal Officer and Village Administrator about purchasing and purchase orders. Work in difficult weather conditions.
QUALIFYING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Minimum Requirements)
Requirements:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to High School or GED.
Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License. Employee must be able to drive Village’s vehicles and equipment and must be insurable and insured under the Village’s insurance policy.
Preferred Characteristics:
Three years of experience in construction or operating heavy machinery and equipment
Special Requirements
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to endure frequent walking and standing and lift up to 100 pounds. Must have good or correctable vision with the ability to read measurement gauges accurately at a distance. Must be able to climb ladders and access various types of confined spaces. Physical effort is required to perform manual labor.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is mainly performed outdoors in varying weather conditions at all times of day or night. Risks of physical hazard from mechanical and electrical equipment, traffic, and exposure to noise and fume. Work requires being placed on a rotating weeklong standby and responding to system alarms and emergencies on a 24-hour basis. The employee will be periodically required to work an alternative work schedule including weekends and holidays. Employee must remain within a 30-minute response time to the water system service area while on standby. Work includes confined space entry, and hazardous chemicals.

Special Requirements
- If the street worker does not have Class B CDL, they are required to get one within 2 years of employment.
- Other licenses like spraying and chemical application for Village purposes are a plus
- Worker must pass a pre-employment drug test.
